West Hartford resident to lead CT-ALIVE

Friday, March 2, 2012

The Connecticut Alliance for Victims of Violence and Their Families Inc. recently named West Hartford resident Katie Marinan its new president.

CT-ALIVE is a community-based victim services organization headquartered in West Hartford that has been in existence as a non-for-profit Connecticut corporation since May, 2002 and tax exempt since August, 2003.

Marinan, a West Hartford native, is an active community volunteer in groups like the West Hartford Junior Women’s Club, local arts and businesses. Marinan is employed by Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association as director of Continuing Legal Education and Fund Development.

CT-ALIVE’s mission is to help victims heal, grow and change after violence and abuse. Its services which include support, advocacy and education are provided free-of-charge. CT-ALIVE current activities focus on its Never Going Back to Abuse Project that builds on the life-saving work of domestic violence shelters and sexual assault crisis centers in this state.

While the goal of those programs is to get the women safely out of abuse, this project helps women stabilize their lives emotionally, financially and socially so that they will not return to an abusive relationship in the future.

Through this project, CT-ALIVE supports the motivational workshops of Susan Omilian of West Hartford, the award-winning originator and facilitator of My Avenging Angel Workshops. They are dedicated to the memory of Susan’s 19-year-old niece Maggie killed in 1999 by her ex-boyfriend.

Funding is provided by the Petit Family Foundation honoring Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela Petit murdered in Cheshire CT in 2007; from the Office of Victims of Crime of the U.S. Department of Justice and Target Store grants.

Upcoming: An Evening of Thriver Spirit and Song will be held Saturday, May 5, at the Mandell Jewish Community Center in West Hartford. Special guest speaker is actress Meredith Baxter.

For more information about the upcoming event, including how to be a sponsor, contact Susan Omilian at ct-alive@comcast.net or visit www.thriverspirit.com.
