HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford is launching a new initiative to encourage women's participation in science, technology, engineering and math.

The two-year program is scheduled to be announced Tuesday at the Science Center .

Special programs and events that highlight the accomplishments of women in the sciences and inspire girls to pursue careers in those fields will be part of the program.

The new initiative is co-sponsored by the Petit Family Foundation, which was established in honor of Jennifer Lynn Hawke-Petit and her two daughters, Hayley and Michaela. The three were killed during a 2007 home invasion in Cheshire.

Among other issues, the foundation focuses on promoting opportunities for young women.
