WFSB partners with Petit Family Foundation for Michaela’s Garden Project

The Connecticut Science Center is hosting a Family Gardening Weekend presented by the Petit Family Foundation this weekend, May 14-15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
According to the Petit Family Foundation Website, Michaela’s Garden Project was formed in the wake of the tragic home invasion and fire that took place in July 2007. Family members arrived at the home to see if any valuables could be salvaged. Little was left, but many of the flowers planted by Dr. Bill Petit and Michaela survived. The Four O’Clock flowers were one of Michaela’s favorites and were dug up and replanted in Plainville, CT.
Michaela’s Garden Project encourages “families and youth to become more involved with community service.” The project had its first mass propagation effort take place in 2010 after enough seeds were collected to begin the project. With the help of many volunteers, about 5,000 plants were produced; all of which came from Michaela’s original garden.
Admission to the Family Gardening Weekend activities is free with the purchase of General Admission or with a Connecticut Science Center Membership. The public is invited to join in as they plant Four O’Clock flowers for Michaela’s Garden as well as seeds. For more information, click here.
