PLAINVILLE — Over 3,000 people came out for the sixth annual Wings and Wheels event earlier this summer with a total of $23,000 raised for two community organizations.

“It was a great event,” said Scott Saunders, a councilor and one of the founders of the event. “The entire donation stays local.”

Proceeds from the event were presented to the Petit Family Foundation and the Plainville Food Pantry Monday night. Each received $11,500, over $3,000 more than last year.

“I think it’s awesome every year it goes up and up,” said Maggie Carlin, president on the pantry’s board of directors. “We’re busy all year.”

Carlin said the funds will aid in the continuous community need for the pantry.

“These are people that really care about Plainville,” said state Rep. William Petit, of the Petit Family Foundation.

The annual donation from Wings and Wheels is used to fund scholarships, the school robotics programs and the STEM program.

Earlier in the summer, the foundation honored two high school seniors with scholarships as part of the “Be the Change” program.

“If it wasn’t for everybody involved, none of this would be possible,” Saunders said.

The event has raised more than $100,000 since 2012.
