Fund Description
The Hayley’s Hope and Michaela’s Miracle MS Memorial Fund
After their mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Hayley Elizabeth Petit and Michaela Rose Petit were relentless in their efforts to raise awareness and funds to fight MS. They each formed a Walk MS team in honor of their mother. The teams were appropriately named Hayley’s Hope, which raised more than $55,000, and Michaela’s Miracle, a team that was just beginning their fundraising efforts.
After the tragic loss of these beautiful women, the Hayley’s Hope & Michaela’s Miracle MS Memorial Fund was formed in 2007 within the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter. The fund provided college scholarships to students with MS or those whose families were affected by MS, and funded vital local programs including caregiver programs, MS family weekends, a patient-oriented research update program, and a family fun day in support of families affect by MS.
With changes to the structure of the National MS Society, coupled with their decision to no longer provide local programs, the fund was transferred to the Petit Family Foundation, where it now resides. The funds will continue to support CT programs for families affected MS. In this first year, we will fund a research update program as well as a family fun event for those impacted by MS.
The volunteer committee that oversees this fund has been stable for many years and includes William A. Petit Jr, MD, President of the Petit Family Foundation, Lisa Gerrol, recently retired President of the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter, Jack Betkoski, former board chair of the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter, James Wasz, Petit Family Foundation Board Member, and Ronald Bucchi, Treasurer and Board Member of the Petit Family Foundation.
